JUNE 08 SACR launches new website for 2008:
SACR Website re-launched! Members will be pleased to see our website back in action again and with a fresh new look. It has taken some expert help and a lot of patience to sort this out and we are sorry for the delay - but hope that you will find the new SACR website an improvement! As you can see, SACR has been busy over the past few months with producing the Scottish NGO report to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (which you can download from the site) and presenting it to the Committee at the pre-session meeting in Geneva on 11 June.
JULY 08 SACR UK Delegation to the UN Committee:
On 11 June, Tam Baillie (Director SACR Board) and Fiona Robertson (SACR Coordinator) travelled to Geneva as part of the UK delegation giving evidence to the UN Committee monitoring the implementation of the CRC. The UK delegation consisted of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and children from England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, as well as Children’s Commissioners from each of the countries.
The purpose of this session was to brief the Committee in advance of the UK Government requirement to report to them in September 2008 on the implementation of the CRC in all parts
of the UK.
SEPTEMBER 08 Rapporteurs Visit and State Party to give evidence to UN Committee:
There will be further opportunities to highlight the issues facing children in Scotland and the work being done to promote children’s rights, with the upcoming Rapporteur UK visits in early September. SACR will be involved in the coordination of the visit to ensure that the work of the NGO sector in Scotland is well represented.
Following on from the evidence and recommendations presented by children, NGOs and the Children's Commissioners at the June Pre-session in Geneva, State representatives from the UK will meet the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child on 23 and 24 September in Geneva, Switzerland.
The meeting will be to discuss the State party report in light of the Convention and OPAC and to participate in defining practical courses of action for improving the situation of children.
